Supports for Aging in Place

Remaining Independent

As we age it can eventually become difficult for some to remain independently in their own homes. Here is an overview of some services available to help residents stay in their homes as long as safely possible.  These are very brief introductions, you can ask for more details by contacting Community Services.

Provincial Resources to help seniors age in their community
A variety of resources are available to help meet the needs of the growing senior population in Alberta, as well as those who support them.

For options to consider when planning for a time when that may not be possible please see the information at

Healthy Meal Options

Are available in Cochrane and Canmore and in the freezer section of your grocery store.

Home Care

Home Care by Alberta Health Services provides free health care services or contracts other home care providers to provide care. Home Care does not provide all the services a senor may need, but can help arrange other supports provided in your area. A Case Manager works directly with the senior and family and is responsible for assessing the needs and ensuring the overall coordination of care and services.

Housekeeping, Laundry, Property Care, Handyman services

Home Care and Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) have lists of local people who may provide some of these services. Depending on your income level, some of these expenses are eligible for reimbursement through Alberta Special Needs Assistance for Seniors.

Income Tax Preparation

For simple tax returns is a free service offered by Canmore and Cochrane FCSS.  Keeping tax returns current is important to ensure you are accessing all the federal and provincial income and support programs available to you.

Personal Response Services

These are provided by non-profit agencies and for-profit businesses. In general, they provide 24-hour monitoring for individuals who may need assistance at home.  Service is accessed by pressing a personal help button.

Transportation Assistance

In the MD there is a a small Transportation Assistance Program and coordination of Volunteer Drivers for occasional trips to medical appointments and programs (for a reasonable fee).
