Parks, Protected Areas & Reserves
Many of the areas in the Municipal District of Bighorn are designated parks, protected areas or reserves. In the Bow Valley you'll find the Bow Valley Wildland Park surrounding most of our developed areas, plus Wind Valley, Yamnuska Natural Area, and the Lac des Arcs Interpretive Waterfowl Viewing Trail. In the Ranchlands area, the Ghost River Forest Reserve is a large land area that runs down the eastern slopes of the Rockies on the eastern boundary of Banff National Park.Maps

On the Grotto Canyon Trail ancient pictographs can still be viewed. Or take a drive on the 1A highway approximately 25km west of Cochrane and you'll find the McDougall Church Historical Site. At Dead Man's Flats, a heritage marker recounts the mysterious beginnings of this community. Hike to the Black Rock Fire Lookout and read a bit about its history (PDF).Looking for more to do?
