Recreational opportunities abound in the MD of Bighorn, from dog sledding, skiing, skating in the winter to hiking, horseback riding, cycling and climbing in the summer. There are many experienced commercial operations just waiting to provide you with a quality outdoor experience. Alternatively, our outdoor backyard is just waiting for you to explore on your own or you can catch a class or a fitness program.



MD of Bighorn, particularly in the Bow Valley, is the staging area for numerous hiking adventures. We boast the first newly constructed portion of the Trans Canada Trail between the communities of Lac des Arcs and Dead Man’s Flats.

The Heart Creek Trail, Grotto Canyon and Jura Creek are all popular destinations.

In the Ranchlands portion of the MD of Bighorn, the Ghost River Forest Reserve is a Mecca for outdoor recreation. Here, there are miles of hiking, cycling and equestrian trails. Take a day or week to explore this marvelous wilderness area.

Each of our residential hamlets has a series of informal trails for local residents to stroll and meet your neighbors.



Sailing in Alberta – why not? Just drop-by the Ghost Reservoir and put your boat in the water to enjoy an afternoon on this popular water area.

Or take your power boat and head out on the Ghost Reservoir for a great day of fishing and boating.

Rafting and canoeing on the Bow River, which flows through Bighorn, are very popular ways to spend a day. Local outfitters can provide you with all the gear and guidance necessary.



The world-renowned Bow River flows through the MD of Bighorn in the Bow Valley. For fly fishermen, there isn’t a finer fishing experience anywhere.

Grotto and Gap pond are popular spots to bring the family, drop a line or climb in a belly boat and then enjoy a picnic on the scenic shores.

Fishing licences are required in Alberta for all non-indigenous people between the ages of 16 and 64 – Fishing Licence Fees and Information 


Other Outdoor Activities

Dog sledding is a very popular activity in this area and a number of outfits can provide you with this experience.

Rock Climbing goes hand-in-hand with the Rocky Mountains. Whether you’re looking to do some scrambling, sport climb and to do some serious vertical, we have the rock.

Still looking for more adventure? How about a day of paint ball, capture the flag or spelunking (that’s climbing through caves).

Each of our residential communities has a variety of recreational opportunities: playgrounds, ball diamonds, tennis courts, playing fields and outdoor skating rinks, just to mention a few.


Golf Courses

The MD is home to oneamazing 18 hole course situated at the gateway to the glorious Rocky Mountains, awe inspiring beauty sets the tone for a relaxing day for the whole family. Located at the intersection of Highways 1A and 1X.

Exshaw Fitness & General Interest Programs

Fitness & General Interest classes are running most of the year. Classes are open to all MD and area residents. Please register promptly so we were able to run them!

Classes will be cancelled Thursday the week before their start date if minimums are not registered by 3 pm.
