October 18, 2018 UPDATE:
Local motorists travelling on Highway 1A through Exshaw have undoubtedly noticed the deterioration of the railway spur-line crossing going into the Lafarge Canada cement plant. Alberta Transportation (AT) has instructed their highway services contractor Volker Stevin to install permanent bump signs for both directions of Highway 1A traffic at this crossing; Volker Stevin is also to ensure the pot hole next to the crossing is continually monitored, and filled as required.
One of the main issues to be addressed, before a permanent solution to the spur-line crossing’s condition is implemented, is water drainage in the area. AT is planning some work to improve drainage near the crossing, but the work in the ditch adjacent to the rail crossing is delayed due to the underground utilities in the area. AT is currently working with these utility companies and hopes that the section of ditch west of the railway tracks can be completed this year; the presence of the ATCO pipeline on the east side of the tracks may cause enough of a delay that this portion may be finished in the spring. Once the drainage issues are addressed, the crossing can be re-built with a upgraded concrete apron style base.
M.D. officials continue to work with AT personnel, and will provide updates to the public, as these become available.
