By Calgary Information Officer, August 16, 2018 1:00:00 PM

Wildfire - EXTREME Danger

Fire Restriction - Alberta Fire Bans

Due to forecasted hot and dry weather conditions, a Fire Restriction is now effect for the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) section of the Forest Protection Area (FPA):

  • Existing Fire Permits are suspended or cancelled
  • No new fire permits will be issued
  • Safe campfires are allowed in fire rings in provincial campgrounds only. No campfires (or other open fires) or charcoal briquettes are allowed in backcountry, random camping areas or private property within the MD of Bighorn. Gas or propane stoves/barbeques and portable propane fire pits are allowed.

Off-Highway vehicles can start wildfires - check frequently to ensure hotspots are free of debris, and make sure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.

The Advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.

  • There are currently 19 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta: are Being Held (BH), 10 are Under Control (UC), and 6 wildfires have been turned over to the responsible parties.
  • Since March 1, 2018, Alberta has recorded 927 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area that have burned a total of 46,047.01 hectares.

Albertans are always asked to use caution when recreating within the FPA:

Now you can check to see if there are any Advisories, Restrictions or Fire Bans in your area using the Alberta Fire Bans app, available for Apple and Android devices.
